It was another beautiful day in Coral Ridge, and Caitlyn was excited: she didn't have to go into work, and because it was the weekend, she didn't have to go to school, so she was super pumped. Best of all, Crystal, her butt kissing soon to be step-mom, hasn't called her yet, and Caitlyn was glad to have some peace without her calling Caitlyn twenty four-seven. As she was getting ready, she thought she would go to the humane society to play with the dogs, and see if there were any new arrivals. Her own dogs, Chip and Baylor, were recused from the humane society, and she loved them both dearly. So, it was them who made her wanted to work at the humane sociery.
After locking up Chip and Baylor in their kennels (she made sure they had enough food and water until her mom came home), and leaving a note for her mom, she left the house in a good mood. But, it was soon broken by her cell-phone ringing. Caitlyn sighed, and she picked up. "Callie, what do you want?"
she asked. Callie was her mean soon-to-be stepsister, and Caitlyn could not tolerate her one bit, and the feeling was mutual. "Mom says she saw a picture you posted on instgram, and it was me: in shark infested waters!" Caitlyn smirked. Death of her step-family was her favorire sketches, but she didn't tell her mom or her dad that. "I'm sure your mom loved it very much, Callie. It showed your true colors." Caitlyn replied, and she heard Callie gasp a little bit. "You little witch!" "Wow, thanks for censoring." Caitlyn commented, and she heard Callie scream before ending the call. Caitlyn tucked her phone in her short pocket before walking up the steps to the humane society. As she entered, she greeted the staff before entering the small hall-way, which had doors that led to the cat room, the director's office, and to her left was the bathroom, and a closet, and towards the end, where Caitlyn was heading, was the dog room. Once she walked in, the barking started, and she glanced at the dogs, but not before she rested her eyes on a light brown puppy with big, white paws. "Oh my gosh, you're so cute! What's your name, little guy?" she asked, glancing at the sheet pinned to his kennel. "Crumbs? Is that your name?" Caitlyn cooed, sticking in her fingers, letting Crumbs lick them. Ordinarily Lenore would have been found locked away in her dorm room or nestled against the arm of one of the plush couches located on the top floor of the library, studying and finishing up assignments for the week. However, today she had decided on taking a break from her studies in favor of a more recreational activity. Nori found herself entering the local humane society, a place that she frequented quite often, giving a slight wave to the volunteer behind the front desk before making a bee-line for the back of the building where the animals were kept.
Truth be told, everytime she came here it took every ounce of self control that she had not to go home with a pet or two. Animals were strictly forbidden on campus but she knew that once she graduated and had her own place she’d definitely be back to adopt an animal. Have been adopted herself she saw the value in giving creatures a second chance at a home and eternal happiness. But for now she’d have to settle for making her frequent visits to the shelter to care for and play with the new arrivals.
Upon entering the dog room she noticed that she wasn’t the only person there, but the other girl seemed a tad busy with one of the new puppies that she didn’t bother to say ‘hello’. Instead, she shuffled over to one of the kennels that housed an older resident of the shelter, 6 year old husky-mix who had been there for a few good months. He was the first one that she would visit each time she came here, “Hey there Steel,” her lips twitched into a bright smile as soon as she saw that fluffy tail of his start to wag excitedly as he sat up and started licking her fingers through the kennel door, “haha, I missed you too, boy.”

As Crumbs was licking her fingers, she was thinking of Helena, her original home-town before moving to Coral Ridge with her mom. Back in Helena, her parents lived on a farm, so they sheltered a lot of animals, especially horses, because her dad was a horse breeder, and was allowed to keep a certain amount of horses. But, they also had chickens and dogs, which were Caitlyn's favorite animal ever. If she could, she would take every dog here. But, she knew her mom, who had Chip and Baylor while Caitlyn went to school, would freak out if she knew Caitlyn had done this.
The sound of the door closing shut roused Caitlyn out of her thoughts, and she looked up to see another girl entering the room as well. The girl looked slightly older than her, but Caitlyn had seen her around campus, but always wanted to talk to her because she seemed nice. Getting up, Crumbs wimpered, and Caitlyn gave him another smile. "It'll be okay, Crumbs. I'll be back."
she said as she walked away from Crumbs's cage towards the girl. The girl was with a husky-mix, named Steel. In fact, Baylor was a husky-mix too, except he was black and tan with the blue eyes of a husky. Not wanting to startle the girl, she lowered herself so she could get a look at Steel, too. "Steel is one of my favorite dogs here. He's so pretty." Caitlyn said, giving the girl a smile. It was almost impossible for Caitlyn to not go up to someone, and start talking to them. To Caitlyn, if she sees someone alone, or needs some cheering up, she was there. This particular dog was her favorite one in the shelter, he had been there for so long and it broke her heart to see him week after week in the same kennel, but he was always so excited to see her whenever she stopped by. While she loved being able to visit him and take him on walks in the enclosed yard behind the building, she knew that she would be much happier knowing that he had been adopted out by a family who loved him just as much as she loved him. In all honesty, if she had the means to adopt an animal right now he would have been her very first choice. Most people came to shelters to adopt the puppies and kittens, leaving the older animals behind, which was tragic because they needed loving families just as much as the younger creatures did. Thank fully this particular shelter was a no-kill shelter so he’d remain here until someone adopted him no matter what.
“No worries, buddy. You’ll find a home soon, I’m sure of it.” She whispered soothingly to him as she stuck her fingers through the holes in the gate to caress his head.
She was brought out of her reverie by the other girl kneeling beside her and speaking, taking her momentarily by surprise, “He certainly is. He’s been here so long I sometimes feel like he thinks this is what the rest of his life is going to be like, it’s really sad, you know?” Tilting her head to the side she ran her fingers along the cold metal of the kennel door before bringing her fingers to the latch, lifting it up and letting the door swing open.
“The one thing I love about this place is that they let us take the dogs out and give them the attention that they deserve.” Her lips twitched into a small, shy smile which grew brighter as soon as her gaze landed on the bright eyes of Steel and the fervent wag of his tail as he sauntered out of his kennel and leaned against both girls, his way of begging for affection.

Back in Helena, she and her best friend, Waverly, would go to the humane society to look at the animals. Caitlyn's mom would always tell the girls to not bring anything home, no matter how cute it was. But, it was crime, because as stated before, Caitlyn's family lived on a farm, so of course, Mrs. Zimmerman gave in when Caitlyn would tell her parents about a certain animal that she saw at the humane society with Waverly. But, now that they were residing in Coral Ridge, it broke Caitlyn's heart to see all of these animals locked up in cages. At least the staff told her that this humane society was a no-kill, so that put her mind to ease.
Caitlyn nodded, giving a smile to the girl. "I know. It breaks my heart."
she said as she watched the girl unlatch the cage, and Steel came out, her smile became a grin. "You're just a big teddy bear, aren't you?" she asked, using the cooing voice she used when she talked to Crumbs. Caitlyn rubbed Steel on the head, relaxing. Being around animals put her in a soothing mood, especially she had to deal with Crystal and Callie all day. She looked at the girl again. "Well, that's good: I couldn't stand them being cages all day." When she comes here, she gives all the animals her attention, and sometimes if she's in the cat room, she'll take out several, because she knew that they hated being cooped up all day in a stinky cage. Because, even if cats weren't her favorite animals, they needed love and attention too, and she felt as if the dogs got picked over more than the cats did, but she's glad that some of them got adopted, especially Ocean, an cat that loved to cuddle (and was her all-time favorite cat in the cat room, besides Gchita). Growing up they had mostly had cats and fish, which, Lenore wouldn’t have complained about because she loved all animals but there was something warm and inviting about dogs. How they were always excited to see you and always ready to play, how they just knew when you were upset or having a bad day and would strive to make it up to you by giving you sloppy kisses and furry cuddles. Cats, on the other hand, were incredibly independent creatures and usually didn’t care how your day was going and only gave you attention when they felt like it.
She watched the other girl interact with Steel and couldn’t help but to smile, “My name’s Lenore by the way. You go to Hopkins, right? I think I’ve seen you around campus.” Nori made an attempt at small talk, something she usually steered clear of with strangers due to her shyness. But she figured that it would’ve been quite rude of her to not at least introduce herself since the girl had made the initial attempt at conversation.
Lenore spent the majority of her time locked away rather than truly enjoying herself, so any glimpses she may have caught of the other girl on campus would have been in passing, but she knew that she looked familiar to her. Or perhaps she was mistaking her for someone else, in which case she’d feel rather foolish for bringing up the subject in the first place. Maybe she shouldn’t have said anything in the first place? Running her bottom lip between her teeth, the blonde began to have a mini-anxiety attack. She was the text book definition of a bookworm; booksmart and intelligent, but when it came to social interaction she was awkward and horrid at it. Her stomach began to churn, waiting for a reply from the other girl, to distract herself from her treacherous thoughts she focused her attention on Steel.

Caitlyn smiled as the girl, now known as Lenore, introduced herself. "My name is Caitlyn. Nice to meet you, Lenore. You have such a pretty name!"
she explained. As far as names went, hers wasn't anything special, except her middle name: her dad was a little disappointed when she was born (he always wanted a son, but he still loved Caitlyn, because after all, she was his little girl), so her mother decided that her sad could pick out her middle name since her mother picked her out her first name, Caitlyn. So, her dad picked out Jordan, which suited her full name quite nicely. Hopkins didn't seem that big: in fact, she was certain that Hopkins was small, but whatever size the campus was, Caitlyn had loved it right away when she heard about it from her soon-to-be step-mother, Crystal. Caitlyn nodded. "I do: I love being at Hopkins. I think it's a really cute campus." she replied. Even better, Coral Ridge was cute too, and she loved the city very much, even more than Helena, and that was saying something, since Helena was where she had grown up. She supposed she didn't have to ask Lenore the same question, since it was obvious that Lenore that went to Hopkins as well. "Are you studying for anything particular?" Caitlyn asked, since the subject of Hopkins came up. Caitlyn herself was hoping to follow in her dad's footsteps in doing something that dealt with aniamls: perhaps a vet, because she hated seeing sick animals dying, or abused animals. Her cheeks tinted a light rosy-color at the compliment towards her name, “Thank you, Caitlyn.”
When she was younger she had never really cared much for her name, it seemed like two out-dated names tacked on infront of her last name and she always felt like it was a name that an 80 year old grandmother would have. As she grew older she began to really appreciate her name, especially after getting into poetry and Edgar Allan Poe when she was in middle school. Now that she’s much older she realizes how unique and pretty her name really is, you don’t meet too many Lenore’s in your lifetime. Part of her always wondered what the story behind her name was though. Since she never knew her birth parents she couldn’t just ask them why they picked Lenore Cecelia, not that she actually care to or even wanted to meet her birth parents, but her curiosity made her want to know whether there was a specific story behind her name or if they just thought it was pretty.
“Yeah, I love that it’s not a hole-in –the-wall type of campus, but at the same time it’s not so gigantic that it’s overwhelming. It’s the perfect size and it’s easy to get around and find things.” She’d been attending Hopkins for a few years now and was close to graduating, which both excited and terrified her at the same time. While she felt that she was pretty independent on her own, living on campus and providing for herself, Lenore didn’t know if she really liked the idea of living in the ‘real world’ and supporting herself and paying bills and working full-time. But at the same time she sort of enjoyed entertaining the thought of herself being that independent adult who worked fulltime and had a nice house and a family.
Her pale lips twitched, pulling back into a small smile, “I’m studying the Arts; music and art, but I major in Photography.” After thinking about it for a minute she felt the need to clarify, “I’d like to be a wedding photographer after I graduate, that’s why.” Because when she told people that she was majoring in ‘photography’ and the arts they always seemed to give her a weird look, as if to say ‘you won’t find a decent job with a degree in art under your belt’. In all honesty it depended on what sort of field you wanted to go into, Wedding Photographers actually made quite a bit of money per job. Though money didn’t really mean much to her, it was nice to have and certainly was a bonus, but it was the art of photography that she enjoyed.

"You're welcome, Lenore."
Caitlyn replied, giving her another smile. Her name wasn't all that special: her mom picked it out, but it was her dad who made a huge fuss. Secretly, he was hoping for a boy, but he loved Caitlyn just the same. So, her mom had her dad pick out her middle name, and he chose Jordan, which went nicely with her first and last names. She didn't think her name was bad, or anything, and she got some pretty cool nick-names out of it (her favorite was CJ, which is what her cousin, Brandon, calls her). But, when a lot of people think of the name Caitlyn, they usually think of a cheer-leader, which Caitlyn wasn't in any way, shape, or form. Caitlyn nodded, agreeing. "I agree: that's one of the reasons why I love the campus: you can find everything." Of course, she was a freshman, so she had a long time to graduate, depending on her choice of major. But, she was in no hurry, because she loved Hopkins very much, and didn't want to leave the cute campus. It'd be her home until she graduates, and for Caitlyn, she'd never want to leave Hopkins if it means not graduating (she'd have to graduate at some point). She smiled at Lenore. "That's cool. I want to major in animal medicine. When I was growing up, my dad bred horses for a living, so I want to follow in his footsteps..sort of." she said. She knew animal medicine took a lot of schooling, but she was determined to do it, even if it was a lot of work. "What made you want to go into photography?" she asked, curious. She was always curious about what other people are majoring, and some of them are really interesting, like Lenore's. She laughed, “I remember my very first week there, I was so lost that entire week it seems. Despite the fact that campus isn’t that big I still found myself getting horribly lost everytime I left my dorm. It was awful! Luckily, after that first week I finally got in the swing of things and figured everything out, but man oh man, did that week suck.” It wasn’t really a story that she particularly enjoyed telling people, even though she found it to be quite funny looking back on it, but it was one of her more embarrassing moments in life. Back then she had been far too shy to even ask upperclassmen for help or directions, being far too stubborn and relying on her campus guidebook instead. Though, she was still rather shy now, but she had come a long way since her freshmen year where she had barely talked to anyone the entire year. While she did have a couple friends, the majority of her class probably didn’t know who she was and would tell you that she was the quietest, shyest kid they had ever known. However, her friends would argue otherwise; while she was quiet in class she was actually quite vocal and outgoing when around people that she knew rather well, her personality would do a complete 360 when put in a group of the people she loved and trusted.
“That sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve heard it’s a lot or work and sleepless nights though, you have to do a lot of studying and make a certain GPA. It’s tough but I bet it’s incredibly rewarding once you’re finished.” Her fingers nimbly stroked the fluff of Steel’s neck before moving upwards to scratch behind his ears. Her lips curled back into a grin when his leg began to thump against the floor out of appreciation, that was one of the things she loved about dogs—they never failed to let you know just how much they loved and appreciated the attention they received from you.
Pursing her lips together, the blonde made a humming sound out of contemplation, before tilting her head slightly, letting her bangs fall into her eyes, “Well, I guess I’ve always been into arts—music, photography, painting, and all of that. When I was younger, my mother had these old wedding and bride magazines and I just…fell in love with all of the pictures. I started out with taking pictures of things in nature; scenery and animals mostly. But, I want to be the one who’s taking pictures of some beautiful bride on her special day, I want my pictures to wind up in those magazines for thousands of people to see.” As she spoke about her life’s dream, a sort of determined look entered her eyes, replacing the shy and wary stare that had been there moments before, before she turned back to Caitlyn and offered her a sheepish smile, “Sorry, I’m sure that probably sounded kind of silly…”

Caitlyn grinned. Even with the map she had gotten, she still left lost. She even went into the wrong classroom, and everyone laughed at her. So, she was glad that Lenore had some-what experience she had. "Oh my gosh, that is awful! When I was just getting used to the campus, I walked into the wrong classroom on accident, and everyone laughed--and they were upperclassmen." she said. Some of the upperclassmen were helpful. Some upperclassmen guys were too friendly, and she could guess if they helped her with finding her classes, they would want something in return. Um, no thanks!
Caitlyn petted Steel on the head, thinking of what Lenore had said. Her dad always told her that animal medicine was going to be hard, but it was what she wanted to ever since she job-shadowed a vet in the sixth grade, and that dream never went away. Oh, sure, she had changed her mind over the course of the years, thinking that animal medicine wouldn't work out, but it was like a stubborn fly: no matter how much you shoo it away, it'll keep pestering you until you squish it. Caitlyn nodded. "Yeah, I always think of it like that. My dad always said the same thing."
As she listened to Lenore, she could detect the determination, and dedication in her voice about what she was majoring in. It was how she felt about animals, sketching, and other things, and that's what she liked in people: if they have the passion for something, she found it really awesome. "I don't think it's silly. I really like your dream: it's really nice. If I ever got married, I'll be sure to hire you as my photographer." Caitlyn said, meaning every word. Of course, the if was stressed, because after the divorce, her mom had been paranoid about men, but she liked Brandon and Zayden just fine, but it was the idea of Caitlyn having a boyfriend that made her worried. Lenore bit her lip, attempting to hold back her laughter, but instead found it too difficult to do so and let out a high-pitch giggle at Caitlyn’s story, “I’m sorry to hear that. I feel as if they should have remembered that they were once confused little freshmen too once.” She immediately felt bad about laughing, but then recalled that she had, just moments ago, shared a similar embarrassing freshmen story about herself so she felt as if it was alright for her to find the other girl’s misfortunate freshmen story funny. Everyone had been there before, she guaranteed that every single one of those upper-classmen had once gotten lost during their freshmen year. Sometimes it was hard to remember that she, too, was once a 1st year student who didn’t know her way around—it felt like forever ago that she was just starting out at college, but at least she wasn’t a jerk about it like some of her classmates were towards the younger students.
“But you shouldn’t let the fact that it’s going to be hard work deter you from going after your dream. I think if you have the passion and determination to go after what you want that nothing’s going to stop you from achieving your goal.” Her eyes lingered on the girl for a moment and how she treated Steel before she spoke up again, “If it means anything, I think you’d be great working with animals. They really seem to like you and you seem very gentle and kind.” While they had just met moments ago, she could already tell that Caitlyn was incredibly kind-hearted and Nori felt like the brunette could succeed at whatever she put her mind to.
“Well if you get married and choose me, I’ll definitely have to give you a discount on my services since you were among the first people to support my dream” She grinned.

As she heard Lenore laugh, Caitlyn didn't think Lenore was being mean. In fact, she started to laugh herself. "Well, I'm glad you're really nice: because some of the upper-classmen, especially the girls, weren't so nice."
Caitlyn thought about Lenore said: she had to admit, she was right about the upper-classmen thinking about when they were freshmen in Hopkins. It would really be less nerve-wrecking to freshmen when they went to go ask for help being rejected or hitted on. Caitlyn smiled. Hearing that from Lenore really meant a lot to her, even if she just met her. "Thanks. My parents always said the same thing." she replied, looking down at Steel, and gave him another smile, which made his tail wag. She was raised on a farm, so chances her being gentle and kind to animals was a given. When horses would come to their farm so her dad could start the breeding progress, she would help the mares be calm, and when the foals would be born, she would help them feed them until the mare and foal would be ready to go back to their owners. "Thank you: for in the future, I mean. You seem dependable, and even if I haven't seen a picture of yours, they will be lovely." Caitlyn responded, grinning back at her. Her cheeks turned a light dusting of pink at the compliment and she momentarily turned away from Caitlyn and shyly began to fiddle with the hem of her blouse. Lenore had never been very good with taking compliments and even though it was a simple little thing that probably shouldn’t have meant much to her, it still was enough. “I know what you mean.” She had experienced the not-so-nice upper-classmen that Caitlyn spoke of, luckily for her the ones that had harassed her during her freshmen year had all graduated or dropped out so she no longer had to worry about being teased. “Despite how cruel some people can be, it’s up to you to be the bigger person and to counteract their horridness with some kindness of your own. It could mean the world to someone.” She had been shown kindness in her younger years by a stranger who had witness her being teased by the older kids and it certainly had meant the world to her, it brought her from the brink of depression back to the land of the hopeful and free.
Lenore laughed, her wavy locks bouncing with the motion, “Th-thank you. I’d like to say that I’m a pretty reliable person.” Before adding as an afterthought, “I’ll have to show you some of my pictures sometime—you know, so you know what your potential wedding photographer’s work looks like.” Her pale pink lips twitched, curving into a small smile at the thought.
“S-so, what sort of things do you do around here for fun?” She was curious what other, normal, people did for fun since she knew that what she did for fun as opposed to what others did was, usually, vastly different from each other. For one, she much preferred to stay inside and read, or be by herself out in nature taking photographs. But for the most part her idea of fun didn’t include the accompaniment of another human being.

Caitlyn was never the one who would take it, so sometimes, she would speak up, and say it wasn't very nice to tease someone who was younger than you, and that usually stunned the upper-classmen, and would make them be quiet, but not for very long. Plus, when she saw the same thing happen to another girl who was much more quieter than Caitlyn was, Caitlyn stood up for her, and had taken the girl under her wing for awhile until the girl had found friends of her own, but she and Caitlyn had remained in contact, and talked sometimes. "I did that for another girl who was getting teased, and she and I still talk, even though she had found friends."
Caitlyn told her. Her mom would always tell her to kill the bullies with kindness, and that sometimes worked, but sometimes what all it took was some of their own medicine, in which Caitlyn would use words instead of her fists to talk to them. Caitlyn nodded, laughing as she did so. "That would be great, thanks!" If she wanted good pictures, she might as well get a good photographer, and if Lenore say she's good, then Caitlyn would take her up on her offer. Plus, it wasn't never too early to start thinking about her dream wedding, if only her mom would let her have one. She bit her lower lip, and thought about it. "Well, I don't know about other people, but for me, I love to sketch and skate-board." she said. Brandon, her cousin, had taught her how to skate-board, and she loved every minute, but she didn't think Lenore would like to learn, and she couldn't picture Lenore on a skate-board anyways. But, she and Lenore did share a passion for the arts, even if their passion laid in different directions.
